For businesses, generic AI responses are often not enough. Companies need AI assistants that can understand and answer questions from their own documents, policies, reports, and internal knowledge bases while providing accurate and context-aware responses.
2. What is RAG (Retrieval-Augmented Generation)?
To solve the challenges discussed above, RAG was introduced.
RAG stands for Retrieval-Augmented Generation. In simple terms, it is a technique that helps Large Language Models (LLMs) generate responses using specific business data instead of relying only on their pre-trained knowledge.
The complete process mainly involves three major steps:
- Retrieve
- Augment
- Generate
These three steps allow businesses to use AI systems in a more accurate, reliable, and customized way.
Retrieve in RAG.
The first step in RAG is Retrieval.
But retrieve from where?
Modern AI applications work with massive amounts of business data such as PDFs, policies, reports, invoices, technical documents, and internal knowledge bases. To manage and search this data efficiently, specialized databases are used.
Unlike traditional databases where information is stored in rows and columns, RAG systems work with vectors.
A vector is simply the numerical representation of text. Since LLMs understand numbers better than raw text, documents are converted into vectors before being stored.
In simple terms:
- Documents are converted into numerical representations (vectors)
- These vectors are stored inside vector databases
- Whenever a user asks a question, the system retrieves the most relevant information from those stored vectors
This retrieval process helps the AI system access business-specific information before generating a response.
Augment in RAG.
Now moving forward, we have Augment.
Augment simply means to enhance or amplify, but what exactly are we amplifying here?
In the retrieval step, the system retrieves the most relevant vectors related to the user query. However, retrieval alone is not enough. The retrieved data now needs to be combined properly with the user prompt before passing it to the LLM.
This is where Augment comes into the picture.
In this step, the retrieved vectors are compared and combined with the user query. The system prepares a final prompt by attaching the most relevant retrieved information along with the original user question.
In simple terms:
- User asks a question
- Relevant vectors are retrieved
- Retrieved information is attached with the prompt
- Final enhanced prompt is sent to the LLM
This step is very important because the quality of augmentation directly impacts the accuracy of the final response generated by the AI system.
A well-augmented prompt helps the LLM understand:
- what the user is asking
- what business data should be used
- how the response should be generated
This allows the AI system to generate more accurate, context-aware, and business-specific responses instead of generic answers.
Generate in RAG.
Last but not the least, and probably the most important part of the complete RAG flow β Generate.
This is the final step where the AI system generates the response for the user query. Everything we discussed in the previous steps finally comes together here.
In the retrieval step, the system retrieves the most relevant vectors from the vector database. In the augmentation step, the retrieved information is combined with the original user prompt to create an enhanced prompt.
Now this complete augmented data is passed to the LLM using chains or pipelines.
In simple terms:
- User asks a question
- System retrieves relevant vectors
- Retrieved data is combined with the prompt
- Final augmented prompt is passed to the LLM
- LLM generates a human-readable response
This step is very critical because the final quality of the response completely depends on:
- retrieved data quality
- prompt augmentation
- model capability
The main purpose of the LLM here is to understand the combined context and generate a natural, accurate, and human-readable response for the user.
This is how RAG systems help businesses build AI assistants that can answer questions using their own documents and knowledge bases instead of giving only generic internet-based responses.
Businesses are increasingly moving toward AI systems that understand their own data. RAG is becoming one of the most practical ways to build accurate and scalable enterprise AI assistants.
